BASIC CHOKES/LOCKS FOR THE GUARD, MOUNT AND BACK POSITIONS
Chokes and Locks from Guard
Here are three basic chokes and locks from the guard position:
Arm Bar
The Arm Bar is a large joint lock that centers on the elbow's inability to bend up. This submission is extremely effective in that is it a powerful move and can be performed at almost all positions. The Arm Bar is considered one of the most basic moves but is still feared by even the most advanced practitioners.

Leg Triangle
The leg triangle is a great move because it can be performed from multiple positions in the guard. It is highly effective in that it centers on the carotid artery to make them pass out. Triangles are great to catch someone in position transitions with quick accuracy to get that winning tap out.

Cross Collar Choke
With its ability to be used at almost any time the cross collar is a choke that is almost like a safety blanket for some. This choke like the leg triangle is centered on the carotid artery to make them pass out. It is also helpful if you aren't doing well with your guard the cross collar is great to distract your opponent long enough to regain control of your guard.

Locks/Chokes from Mount
Arm Bar
Like the arm bar from guard the arm bar from mount is just as powerful but it packs more of a punch with its ability to be performed from mount. The mount being one of the most dominant positions there is is great to perform arm bars in that you have more control and can take your time against your opponent.

Triangle from the Mount
Now the triangle from the mount is a little more complicated than the triangle from guard in that it requires a lot more steadiness and balance. Even though it is more difficult the triangle is still considered a basic yet strong more for beginners to know.

Cross Collar Choke from Mount
The cross collar from mount is basically taking the original choke from the guard to a more controlling position. It still keeps its ability to be used as a moved to distract the opponent then attack them however it is used more towards actually attacking them.

Locks/Chokes from Back
Arm Bar from Back
Like all of the arm bar positions the arm bar from the back is just as powerful and controlling as the mount. It is easy manipulate your opponent from this position and control them into a position where you can shoot in for the submission. This move is great to surprise your opponent with a quick transition and is very effective if performed correctly.

Bow and Arrow Choke
This choke is one of my personal favorite and the first move I ever learned. It is a great move to wear down your opponent in that you can prolong the move and work on your opponent yet still be able to quickly take your opponent out. This move is also great because it can be performed from the very dominant position of the back .

Rear Naked Choke/Lion Killer
I have saved the best for last. The RNC is one of the most lethal and effective chokes in all of Jiu Jitsu and MMA. It can be used at almost any time from the back position and can take out even the strongest practitioners. Its ability to also be used in real world situations is why the Lion Killer is the last of only a hand full of moves you'll learn while training Jiu Jitsu.
